I have mixed emotions... It's important to support local economies and have retail access to parts and supplies but is it worth feeling ripped off every time you walk through the door? What say you?
Honestly, its probably a good thing. After being fleeced for so long by West Marine, the industry could use a reset. Supporting local to me is supporting the Mom & Pop type stores. Usually getting a more pleasurable buying experience where knee pads are not required.
I never understood why they don't open until 9:00 . Most boat people have done a half days work and found what we needed somewhere else for less money by the time they open the doors.
Sadly, no mom & pop stores in N/E FL. Any other marina store belives in B O A T (Bend Over And Take-it). I have been doing business with Port Supply (West Marine jobber whole seller) for near 20 years now. Fair pricing but free deliver, mostly by local van, even in my swamp. I have noticed lately larger boat parts and equipment is not available any more. ie; 1/4" x 3" prop shaft cotter pins. Lots of other items are missing also. But after 3 different owners in the last few years, I kind of expected this coming.
The big stores (Hubs) are open late. Little stores close early to save on payroll. I have not shopped in any WM store in 6 years. I shop on line when I get in from the dock. Sometimes the van is here the next morning with my order. Sometimes shipped from SC when not in local stock. Big (expensive) stuff I shop around for. Sometimes Amazon comes thru. McMaster-Carr came thru on those cotter pins. Shipping was near the same cost for a pack of 5. Ordered Sunday night, in today.
Quick Post West Marine's Bankruptcy Situation West Marine is preparing for a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. This decision is driven by the need to restructure its debt and lease obligations due to ongoing financial challenges. Reasons for Bankruptcy Consideration Debt Restructuring: West Marine aims to reorganize approximately $800 million in debt, which was previously restructured in late 2023. Lease Obligations: The company is facing pressures related to its lease agreements, prompting the need for a court-supervised process to manage these liabilities. Store Closures: As part of the restructuring efforts, West Marine is considering closing several store locations to streamline operations. Background Information Ownership: West Marine is privately held and managed by Oaktree Capital Management and L Catterton, which acquired a controlling interest in the company in April 2021. Market Position: It is the largest boating retailer by sales in the United States, but has been affected by slowing demand in the marine retail sector. Recent Developments: Discussions with its owners about overhauling debt and addressing business shifts have been ongoing, indicating a proactive approach to its financial situation. This potential bankruptcy filing is seen as a necessary step for West Marine to stabilize its operations and navigate the current economic landscape in the marine industry.
I will really miss them if they go. I order half of my stuff via the van, but the other half is on the fly and I'll stop in the store to grab something quick during a job. Problem is, aside from the Fort Lauderdale mega store. If you go in for 3 items that are pretty routine, they'll have 1 item, they'll have the 2nd item half of the time, but they'll never have all 3 items in stock......their inventory sucks, unless you want t-shirts or a choice of 50 different coolers.
Before my move to the swamp, I was mobile on the left side of Jax. Had 2 stores to tap on while driving by. Like the big Liquordale store, The Jax hub is in the south-side of Jax. Just a PIA in getting to. I'd wait on the van the next morning. Funny thing about here in the swamp. The van goes by St Aug and sometimes Daytona. If the hub does not have it and these other mid size sores do, they will pick it up during their route and drop it on me around mid day. I don't think they will go. Just some slow stores will close and maybe, maybe, less fancy shirts, less floor space and back to a marine supplier.
Boat is presently in NC but spent the last 10 years in Stuart, FL. After I discovered Boat Owners Warehouse I rarely went into a WM. WM became more of an apparel store and lifestyle store. One more example of Private Equity doing what it does.
My beef with WM stores isn’t the price it s the lack of availability. As J said, if you go in to get 3 or 4 of something like a plumbing fittings they ll rarely have that in stock. Even with the Pro discount (I m on the medium silver plan) their prices are usually barely better than defender or even local privately owned marine stores. I doubt they ll go away but some stores will definitely be going away.
The best thing about having your boat in Ft Lauderdale is that they have a large West Marine, Boat Owners Warehouse 2 block away, and 1 block away is McDonald hardware who carries lots of yacht hardware and supplies. And then across the street from BOW is Lesters Diner, which sits within 1/2 mile radius of maybe 100 boat supply stores with anything boat or yacht related you can imagine. But I still routinely go to West Marine in Ft Lauderdale for supplies on a weekend.
With the diminishing shelf stock and the push to order On Line for some basic stuff, this was coming. Locally, Lighthouse Marine Supply will be getting busier with walk-ins
BOW/Lewis is also having it's supply issues and some empty shelves (not as bad as WM though) and I've heard not paying vendors in a timely manner.
I have not been to the Cuban restaurant next door, but our favorite Cuban in that area is Padrinos, they have one on Sterling and Hallandale. Just down the street from Lesters is Old Heidelberg which is a quite good German restaurant.
Padrinos is good, our church always caters from there. Haven’t had the German yet but we’ll try it. Sorry for the thread creep, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
