Autumn 2004 has been a very busy time at Holland Jachtbouw as the hulls of our next two builds, the Hoek Schooner “Skylge” and the 37-meter Dixon Sloop, arrived at the yard. The contrast between them is amazing. Hoek’s narrow hull, with fine ends and long overhangs, has a deep lifting fin keel and spade rudder. Dixon’s Sloop, with far greater beam-to-length ratio, and shorter, more ends, has a moderate-chord foil keel with a fine bulb, and a carbon-fibre rudder.

“Skylge”
Hoek Design has created one of its loveliest classic hulls, with sweet lines, flush deck, and minimal pilothouse. The interior, also drawn by Hoek Design, will have a refreshingly contemporary styling in light cherry wood joinery. “Skylge”’s carbon-fibre rig and hydrodynamic shaping have been optimized for speed on and off the wind by extensive VPP analysis and wind tunnel tests. When lowered, the high-aspect keel, with ballast bulb, will increase “Skylge”’s draft to 5.2 meters to balance the enormous power of her rig, which will carry asymmetric spinnakers on both masts.

37-meter Dixon Performance Cruiser...

Bill Dixon describes this ultra-modern 37-meter as “minimalist”. But to us, everything about her - trim house, low freeboards, high-lift bulbed keel, and tall carbon-fibre rig- says “speed”. And we are going “the extra mile” to keep her light on her feet by having her built in Alustar. We are also creating a Nomex-cored pear wood interior, designed with great care and taste by John Munford, and choosing only lightweight system components. As she heads to the Mediterranean in 2006, we want to assure her owner that when the winds go inevitably light she’ll still leave the crowd in her wake.
