I just read in a major publication of a lawsuit from the owner of Moonrise suing the interior designer of his new yacht.
Basically they were inflating invoices and then adding their contractual percentage on top. In addition they were charging for high quality merchandise and providing cheaper knock offs.
I wonder if this is just the first of many we will hear of?
I was friendly with an owner who's build Captain did the same thing, to the tune of about a million dollars.
Should be interesting to follow this one!

It is hard to bring up news and repeat it briefly.
In brief, you discussed some topics that I can easily understand your concern.

There are always two sides to any issue.
I have witnessed some stories of my own, so may I ramble a few thoughts?
Its raining outside this morning, so I have a few minutes.
I have to arm-chair quarterback for a few lines.

Who build managed the project for the owners?
    Was there a purchase manager?
Did the owners just gasp at the final number$$ and start complaining then?
    Probably no contract cap?
    Was there a contract?
There has to be accounting during any project or build, big or small, every step of the way.

A 0.2 cent screw from China is installed a $1.00. This is a crude example but you have to realize how many people were involved in delivering and installing that screw AND they all want to make money off of that screw. That is normal mark up that will be hard to reconcile.

Substitute materials should have been declined before installation. Markup is one thing, materials and hardware below contract standards is another.
No contract standards? No material inspections?

Reads Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to me.

    Now that could be criminal.
Sadly, what I was encouraging above, backfires at times.

Here are all the details of the controversy and the court documents.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...an-Koum-sues-designer-Remi-Tessier-fraud.html

It's not just related to 2 Moonrise, but also to Koum's houses. There are doctored invoices, fake carpets, fake knives, and a chair with an 81% markup. Custom sofas — which weren’t custom — were billed at 43k euros each, but were worth just 20k.
It seems that this kind of practice was normal for Tessier, who had previously been fired by two other billionaires for the same reasons — although they kept it quiet.
As for the carpets, there are 642k euros’ worth of pashmina carpets claimed to be produced in France, when in fact they were made in Italy using synthetic materials (viscose), with a value of less than 50% of the stated price.

There's also a $7.8 million Picasso, bought upon Tessier’s recommendation. The designer allegedly received a backdoor $600,000 payment from the gallery, which was not disclosed to Koum.

Yep, A bunch of shady dealings.
It took 10 years to figure out the rich guy was getting ripped off?

I'm from another world;; But I do not have much sympathy for the supposed victim here.
